The PocketINSIDER – September 09

Now into the playing season, Pocket continues with its blog, covering news, views and insights on America’s team.   In San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen and all around South Texas, we have thousands of Cowboy fans, who just happen to be Pocket fans – and customers.  Here’s the scoop. Pass it on…

After visiting with two NFC scouts and two Cowboys assistants, here is some fallout from the game against Tampa. Andre Gurode and Marc Columbo were outstanding in the offensive line. Jay Ratliff was good, but received virtually no help from his line mates Marcus Spears and Igor Olshansky.

In this defense, no one expects big plays from the ends – but they MUST keep the linebackers free, and they failed to do that with any consistency. As a result, Bradie James did not play well at all.

Gerald Sensabaugh had an outstanding game, but Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins went the other way…Some offensive players are already growing tired of Martellus Bennett’s mental mistakes. One teammate said, “At some point, he is going to cost us if he can’t get the mental side of this down. I love his ability, but he’s got to know his assignments.”

…One NFC scout thinks the most significant improvement in the Cowboys will be rookie kick-off specialist David Buehler.  He estimates the Cowboys will save 40-50 yards per game in field position as a result of the deep kick-offs and touchbacks. That is a lot of “hidden yardage”…

You have to wonder if the Eagles will cut ties with OL Shawn Andrews after this season. He was placed on injured reserve last week after his surgically repaired back failed him again. So, the Eagles must consider his back and a bout with clinical depression when they are making plans for the future.

Remember, this is a kid who has had his desire to play football repeatedly questioned. One Eagles coach told me, “He’s a good kid – he just loves music much more than he does playing ball.”…

Speaking of offensive lines, there is a lot of hand-wringing going on in Pittsburgh. Simply stated, this Steelers OL is going to get Rothlisberger hurt. They didn’t protect particularly well last season, and although we are only a game into this season, they look worse now – according to multiple scouts. Ben is a big guy, but no QB can take a consistent pounding and stay healthy. If he goes down – the Steelers go down…

The Richard Seymour situation is one you should keep an eye on. The Raiders gave up what should be a fairly high #1 to get Seymour, so signing him to a long-term deal is critical for this joke of a franchise. They would like to get something done soon, but if not, they will probably franchise him next season.

If that happens, the **it will hit the fan with big Richard because he wanted assurances from the Patriots and now the Raiders that he wouldn’t be franchised. Neither team was willing to agree to that clause, and Seymour wants to get PAID so stay tuned…

Word out of New York is that new coach Rex Ryan would be willing to simply cut former high #1 pick Vernon Gholston, but the front office still wants to see if he can develop. Although Ryan is brand new, he’s done waiting. One Jet’s player said Ryan thinks Gholston is “too soft to ever be a dominant player.”
